Farming practice at Mattagami Heights has and will always remain free of growth hormones and antibiotics. We believe in humane stockmanship which we feel goes hand in hand with raising cattle on our 160 acres of open pastures.

The Farrell family has been a pillar in the local farming industry for nearly 23 years.

Meet The Farmers

In the 1950s and early ’60s, Timmins ON was home to a thriving dairy farming industry, there were three dairy plants to supply the area. The region has seen what was once a thriving agricultural sector in Timmins decline over the years.

On the surface, it may seem that agriculture is dying a slow death in the North – but rest
assured the local farming economy is experiencing a grass-roots revival as consumers begin to regain awareness of their food sources.

In the early ’80s Dan and Noella Farrell took the plunge and began farming. First dabbling in
sheep and goat farming and eventually beef cows.

By 1993, Mattagami Heights Farm officially laid down roots in beef farming. Through trial & error and experience we found a niche in the heritage Limousin cattle breed.

Limousin Beef

At Mattagami Heights Farm, we primarily breed Limousin cows with some cross breeding. Limousin cows mature lean, which means that weight gain isn’t as fast as
some of the other breeds but the given health benefits are worth it. The beef
is very low is saturated fats!

High Meat Yield

The limousin breed is noted for having a high meat yield. Which means the beef to waste (bones and fat) ratio is better, resulting in more of the cow being consumed. That makes our carbon and food waste footprint even smaller!

No Preservatives

Our beef is 100% preservative free which
results in healthier, carcinogen free beef. Our only means of preservation
is the freezing process. Simply thaw and savour the freshness of
premium quality beef.

Antibiotic Free

Therapeutic antibiotics are administered to unhealthy animals. In the commercial farming industry sub-therapeutic antibiotics are fed every day as a sort of preventative
maintenance. We do not administer antibiotics on any animal that will be consumed.

Grass-fed beef nutrition includes significantly more omega-3 fatty acids and more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than grain-fed beef. Grass-fed beef, one of the best protein foods around, is also higher in precursors for vitamin A and E and cancer-fighting antioxidants compared to grain-fed beef

Small Numbers Means Higher Quality

What make us sustainable makes us good for everyone!


We practice rotational grazing to allow the herd to select the top 40% of the grass for optimal nutrition.

They’re continuously moved to fresh new pastures to select the next best of the best.

During the winter and early spring season, we provide our cattle with grasses/forages that were harvested during the summer when they peak in nutritional levels and store them for winter use. The nutritional levels of these stored feeds can equal or exceed those during the summer months if harvested properly. Just as we are what we eat, our animals are as well. Only the top forage based diet is provided.
